The Energy Exchange of Growing
When you plant a seedling in your garden, you’re not just planting food—you’re planting potential energy. Every seedling you place in the soil has already beaten the odds—it has germinated, pushed through the soil, and survived the delicate early days when it was most vulnerable. It has made it past the threats of insects, disease, unpredictable weather, and competing weeds—and now, it stands at the next threshold, waiting.
Waiting to thrive. To grow. To become the food that fuels you and your family—completing the cycle of energy, from sun to plant, from plant to table, from nourishment to the strength to start it all over again.
This is the cycle we tap into when we grow food—a transfer of energy from soil to seedling, from plant to plate, from nourishment to strength. It’s a cycle that means more to us than we can always put into words, but I see it reflected in the faces of gardeners when they share their successes. The pride in a first tomato, the joy of a flourishing bed of greens—it’s a connection that goes beyond simple sustenance.
And before that plant ever reaches your hands, I’ve already invested my energy into it. I’ve touched it, checked it, nurtured it—I’ve poured care and intention into it. Because before I was a farmer, I was a gardener, and I am still driven like a gardener.
I grow these seedlings with the same energy and hope that you bring when you plant them in your garden. It’s an exchange—my effort and care flow into each seedling, and when it reaches you, you continue the cycle. You take that potential, that stored energy, and bring it to life in your own space. And in return, I get to hear your stories—your successes, your favorite harvests, the joy of pulling a ripe tomato from the vine or watching a pepper finally turn red.
This exchange of energy—from my hands to yours, from seedling to soil, from plant to plate—is what keeps me growing.
