Established in 2014

Whitaker Farm, established 2014, was founded with the desire to feed our families, our community and our soil as ethical stewards for the future.

We focus on using best practices to grow our vegetables, feeding our community year round using a combination of storage crops, climate appropriate growing and season extension tools.

You can find our produce at the Comox Valley Farmer’s Market and Cumberland Market, and our farm store.

Monday and Tuesday are my, (Mariette, in case you are new here) days off. So today in between some admin(ok days off ish) I managed to get some green beans into the freezer for winter

We put away tomatoes, gai lan, spinach, choho, herbs, beans, peas, cauliflower, corn and peppers into the freezer.

Beans are the only ones i blanch. Everything stands up to my abuse but blanching beans is so worth it.

I cant wait to taste these in winter with some @lokyeebakery Kin Yee Chilli Crisp and be transported to summer

You can do this too! 10 lbs will get me and Brian through the winter until next bean season

Head to the @comox_valley_farmers_market over the next few weeks. You will find all the food you want to preserve over winter so you DON’T have to return to the grocery store for much!!

August is hard. We’re coming to the end of two very hot months, and we’ve been working non stop since March to grow food for the community.

The hardest thing about August is that it turns into September

September gets harder with shorter days, sore bodies, Quick tempers, heavier produce.

A lot of my Farmer friends are struggling right now, honestly, we are too.

The type of farming that we do, that small farms do for your community does not pay very well, and after 10 summers of working 60 hour weeks and no breaks, you start to question your life choices.

This post is for my farmer friends. The platitude of self-care are not helpful right now so you won’t hear them from me.

Our food system models are broken. You and I won’t fix it, but at least we keep trying.

Just because we can’t change it all doesn’t mean we aren’t changing some.

You are seen and appreciated. No one expects you to give up all your life energy to this. Just because we don’t know how to change it yet doesn’t mean we won’t know how to get there eventually.

Progressive ideals have not been proven wrong merely difficult.
