Full Time: Market Gardening Intern
Whitaker Farm is bringing on an intern. If you are between 15 – 30 and have an interest in learning about growing food for your community, we have a position for you.! This job is an opportunity to learn about all aspects of farming on a mixed market veg farm while getting paid a living wage!
About Us:
Whitaker Farm, established in 2014, is a mixed market vegetable farm located in North Courtenay in the Comox Valley. We are a low fossil fuel farm, meaning much of our work is done by hand. Our farm feeds over 60 families weekly through our summer box program and we attend two farmers markets a weekend. Our farm is a queer positive, living wage employer. We are passionate about food security and sustainability in the Comox Valley, increasing the accessibility of local, organic produce to everyone in our community, and collaborating to support each other and our farm businesses.
The Position
This position starts in May and runs until October and is full time (35 hours a week). It is funded by the Youth (15 – 30) Employment & Skills Program through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada so age fit is important. Spend your days outside working with the soil planting, nurturing and harvesting food in a small team environment. You will learn by doing alongside experienced growers who also love growing food. Previous experience is not necessary but a sincere interest is important.
Wage is $20.50/hour plus a weekly veg box
Duties include
- Seeding, transplanting veggies
- Cultivating and weeding
- Harvesting food
- Washing and packaging food
- Some market assistance
- Cleaning and maintenance of farm
Schedule
- May – October 35 hours a week.
Ideal Candidate
- Curiosity or interest in gardening and growing. Some previous experience an asset
- Can work outdoors in all weather
- Can get to farm reliably and on time daily
- Hard working and able to lift 30 lbs repeatedly through the day
- Legally entitled to work in Canada

Part Time: Farmers’ Market Rock Star
We have a weekend position looking for the perfect fit. If you are outgoing, enjoy fresh local vegetables, love the farmers’ market and are comfortable with a cash box and a phone, we have a job for you! Help your favorite farmers survive the season by joining them at the Saturday Courtenay Market and then taking the lead on Sunday at the Cumberland Market. Get to know your community knowing you can be proud of what you are sharing with them!

The Position
The Farmers Market position is about 15 hrs/week, Saturdays and Sundays from early June to late-September. Must be comfortable talking to customers, doing cash and square transactions, comfortable being a vegetable hype-person, comfortable working in a group and alone.
Wage is $21/hour plus veggies
Duties include
- Meeting at farm to load trailer or van
- Driving to Cumberland market
- Stall set up and display
- POS and cash out end of Sunday
- Able to lift 40 lbs
Schedule
- Saturday – approx 6:30 am- 2pm
- Sundays approx 8 am – 2:30 pm
Ideal Candidate
- A skilled communicator who’s friendly and fun, and passionate about local food
- Some food-growing or cooking experience. We need someone who knows their veggies and can answer customer questions about what something is, how it’s grown, and how to eat it.
- Clean drivers abstract. Driving experience, preferably 5 years or more. Must have your own transport to get to the farm.
- Excellent customer service skills and energy for 2 days/week of in-person customer interactions in a fast paced environment.
- Is a morning person or can fake it.
- Can work outdoors in all weather – markets are outside and run rain or shine.
